Quintet

English elm and ash

The Quintet chair is a dining chair made of five components working together in harmony.

Available for order. Please contact me if you're interested in purchasing a Quintet chair or a set of chairs. Other woods and finishes are also available. Please note there may be a lead time for these orders.

Quintet is an homage to the seven generations of my family who worked in the Windsor chair industry in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire. It is designed to be lightweight enough to move easily yet sturdy enough for every-day use.

The materials and techniques used in its construction are identical to those that a traditional craftsman would have been using as far back as the 18th century in the traditional Windsor chair industry.

While the materials and techniques are centuries old, Quintet's design is decidedly contemporary. Its standout feature is its rear leg, splitting and curving organically as it bursts through the seat, rising to support the backrest. The size of the split section was carefully chosen to provide the needed strength while retaining enough springiness to have just the right amount of give. This allows the backrest to conform to the sitter's back while still supporting them fully.

This edition of Quintet has an English elm seat, which, though once common, is now rare to find, particularly in the thickness required for a slab seat.
