Commissioning a piece

I got into furniture making because I love the creative process of inspiration, design and crafting something special and unique to the highest standard.
Whatever you have in mind, no matter how big or small, I can help you explore, develop and realise your idea - the commissioning process is completely tailored to you and your project.

Read on to find out how the commissioning process for a bespoke piece usually works or contact me to start a free consultation.

First, we will discuss your vision for the piece. You may have very specific desires or more general ideas, but whatever you have in mind I can help guide you through the possibilities for your budget.
We would look to identify some core specifics: the ideal size, the proposed function, and the planned location for the piece. I will also ask you about your stylistic preferences, to make sure the piece will suit your taste and lifestyle.
Consultations are free of charge, so please do get in touch if you have an idea that's burning away - I would love to hear from you.
Consultation

Next, I will come up with some potential design options, based on what we discussed. I will present you with a few options in the form of sketches, drawings and/or digital 3D models, from which you can choose which idea you wish to go ahead with.

I am always happy to take on board any feedback and tweaks you've requested.

Once you've chosen a design, we'd discuss your preferred proportions for the piece, as well as materials, hardware, colour and finish. I will also provide a quote.
Design

When you're happy with your chosen design, I'll produce scale drawings and/or a digital 3D model for your approval.
At this point I will also request a deposit to allow me to purchase the timber and any other materials and start getting them ready for your piece.
I encourage my clients to be as involved as they like. So if you want to help select the materials (or even possibly provide some of your own) then please let me know. Some clients have visited timber yards with me, and some have provided a piece of treasured timber they've grown themselves.

This is the part where the magic happens. I will make your piece to the specification we've agreed, using the best techniques to produce your piece to the highest standard. Each piece is either partially or wholly made by hand, and always finished by hand.

I particularly love employing traditional techniques so if you have a particular technique you'd like to see represented, I am always interested in finding a way to incorporate it where possible.

Are you interested in seeing your piece being made? Or maybe you might want to help craft a part of it? You can do that - let me know and we can arrange for you to visit the workshop at an opportune moment to see your piece come together.
Making

Once your piece is complete, I will arrange to deliver and instal your piece in its new home.

Your piece is likely to be a one of a kind, and everything I make is designed to last for generations, so I will provide you with a certificate of authenticity as well as care instructions.
Several of my pieces have been nominated for or won awards. If your piece is honoured, then you will receive a copy of the certificate and wherever possible you be invited as my guest at the awards ceremony or reception.
